𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀'𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗺 𝗛𝗭𝗕 80 Schülerinnen aus Berlin und Brandenburg haben an unseren Workshops zum Girls'Day teilgenommen. 13 verschiedene Workshops haben unsere Wissenschaftler*innen, Ingenieur*innen, Student*innen und IT Mitarbeitende angeboten. Mit großer Neugier und viel Spaß haben die Mädchen mikroskopiert und Einblick in die Nanowelt bekommen, Kristalle gezüchtet, Programmiert, mit Stickstoff experimentiert und Eis hergestellt oder auch Schmuck vergoldet. Der Girls'Day ist eine bundesweite Initiative des Kompetenzzentrum Technik-Diversity-Chancengleichheit e. V. und er soll Mädchen dazu ermutigen, auch technische, naturwissenschaftliche oder mathematische Berufe zu ergreifen. Unsere Kolleginnen und Kollegen leisten sehr gern ihren Beitrag zum #GirlsDay und geben den Schülerinnen Einblicke in unsere Forschungs- und Arbeitsgebiete.

𝗔𝗜 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 The Helmholtz Association (Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft) is funding the development of AI models that are capable of solving complex problems in a clearly defined scientific field. The HZB represented by Eva Unger's Group is participating in the development of a AI foundation model for #photovoltaic research in the 𝙎𝙊𝙇-𝘼𝙄 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩: Development and Optimisation of Photovoltaic Materials. Photovoltaics is a key technology for the energy transition. Innovative solar cell concepts must be implemented more quickly to achieve the necessary increase in the global use of low-cost solar power. Research and development activities in this area are increasing rapidly, resulting in a wealth of scientific publications. However, the sheer volume of data is creating limitations in implementing the latest findings. SOL-AI aims to create a foundation model that will fundamentally reform materials informatics in this field. It is capable of integrating the diversity of experimental data and results in the research of photovoltaic materials, advancing innovations in various areas: from accelerated component development and optimization to the discovery of new solar materials. SOL-AI is expected to develop solutions that will have practical relevance for both research and industry. The Helmholtz Centers HZB, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon are participating in the project. Prof. Dr. Eva Unger and Dr. Kevin Maik Jablonka from the HZB are responsible for the content of the project. Solar energy researcher Eva Unger heads the "Solution Processes for Hybrid Materials and Devices" department at HZB, while AI expert Kevin Jablonka is setting up a working group on the use of AI methods for energy materials at the HIPOLE Jena Institute (jointly founded by the University of Jena and HZB). Over the next three years, the four participating Helmholtz centres will develop a functional model that will subsequently be made available to society as open source - from the code to the training data to the trained models.

𝗔 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘃𝘀𝗸𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 Inorganic perovskite solar cells made of CsPbI3 are stable over the long term and achieve good efficiencies. A team led by Prof. Antonio Abate has now analysed surfaces and interfaces of CsPbI3 films, produced under different conditions, at BESSY II. The results show that annealing in ambient air does not have an adverse effect on the optoelectronic properties of the semiconductor film, but actually results in fewer defects. With 4 million Euros the German Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung) is now funding a new initiative at HZB: the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗩 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻  (TEAM PV). It will pursue application-oriented basic and applied research on the upscaling, stability and reliability of perovskite solar cells, together with National Renewable Energy Laboratory, University of Colorado Boulder (Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute - RASEI), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and FAIRmat. GreenQUEST 𝙁𝙪𝙚𝙡 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙇𝙞𝙛𝙚: Burning biomass for cooking causes harmful environmental and health issues. The German-South African GreenQUEST initiative is developing a clean household fuel. It aims to reduce climate-damaging CO2 emissions and to improve access to energy for households in sub-Saharan Africa.

We are pleased to announce that our scientific director Bernd Rech and the president of the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) #YiChangKeun signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today in Daejeon (South Korea). The MOU between #KIER and #HZB formalises existing collaborations between the two institutions. Its broad scope will allow KIER and HZB to build on their shared values and vision and jointly pursue different research avenues in the advancement of renewable energy technologies, furthering their commitment to achieving a sustainable, carbon-neutral, and energy-secure society. Following the recently started EU-project Solmates (Scalable High-power Output and Low-cost Made-to-measure Tandem Solar Modules Enabling Specialized PV Applications) coordinated by Universität Innsbruck (Austria), this MOU aims at opening the way to other coordinated actions. The MOU signing ceremony took place during the delegation visit from the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft / Helmholtz Association Association to Southeast Asia. Under the leadership of President #OtmarWiestler, delegates from various Helmholtz centres travel to Singapore and South Korea. #Quantsol Summer School 2024 - Call for application is now open! The International Summer School on Photovoltaics and New Concepts of Quantum Solar Energy Conversion (#Quantsol) will be held in September 2024 in Hirschegg, Kleinwalsertal, Austria. The school is organised by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and the Technische Universität Ilmenau. “The Quantsol summer school offers a very comprehensive introduction to the field of photovoltaics and photocatalysis and is a great learning experience and a “must attend” for PhD students and postdocs in their early career. In the past, we have received an overwhelmingly positive feedback leading to oversubscription of the school every year” says Prof. Dr. Lips Klaus from HZB.
